Why One Punch Man Isn’t on My Watchlist (Yet)
I know what you're thinking.
"How dare you?"
"Blasphemy!"
"Do you even anime, bro?"
Yeah, I’ve heard it all. One Punch Man has been hailed as one of the most clever, satirical, action-packed anime of the modern era. A caped bald guy who defeats every enemy in a single punch? It’s genius. It’s a parody. It’s art.
But guess what?
It’s still not on my watchlist. And I have reasons. Not excuses—reasons. Let me explain.
1. The Hype Monster Scares Me
Whenever something becomes too hyped, I get skeptical. I’ve been burned before. I still have emotional scars from shows that Twitter promised would change my life… only to deliver mid-tier plots with pretty animation. (Cough Promised Neverland Season 2 cough).
One Punch Man has been riding a wave of god-tier memes and fanboy praise for years now. The moment I sit down to watch it, I feel this weird pressure to LOVE IT.
I don't want to be that person who says, "Yeah, it's okay, I guess." The anime community would eat me alive.
2. I'm Not in My 'Superhero' Era
Right now, my watchlist is full of psychological thrillers, gritty seinen stories, and slice-of-life comfort food. Superheroes? They're on the back burner for me. Saitama might be unbeatable, but he’s competing with the likes of Monster, Parasyte, and March Comes in Like a Lion—and those shows are hitting me right in the existential feels.
I know One Punch Man is a parody of the superhero genre, but if you're not in the mood for explosions and over-the-top villains, it's like ordering dessert when you're craving ramen.
3. The Second Season Controversy
Let’s be honest—Season 1 of One Punch Man is revered. Glorious animation. God-tier pacing. MADHOUSE worked magic.
Then came Season 2… and the animation quality took a hit. J.C. Staff did their best, but the change was noticeable. The buzz around it dipped. And for someone late to the party, it’s hard not to ask:
"Do I really want to invest time in a show that might not keep up its momentum?"
4. I'm Saving It for the Right Time
Believe it or not, some shows deserve to be watched when the timing is right. I’ve made the mistake of watching great anime when I wasn’t in the headspace to appreciate them. I won’t do that to One Punch Man.
Saitama deserves my full attention—my undivided inner child.
Maybe I’ll finally watch it when life feels overwhelming and I need the catharsis of watching a guy punch a god-level threat like he’s squashing a mosquito.
5. The Memes Have Spoiled It (Almost)
It’s hard to be surprised by anything in One Punch Man when I’ve seen every major scene turned into a GIF on Reddit or TikTok. Saitama’s bored face? Seen it. That one punch against Boros? Spoiled. Genos doing Genos things? You guessed it—spoiled.
The memes are great, but they make me feel like I’ve already experienced the show without ever pressing play. And that sucks.
Final Thoughts
So no, One Punch Man isn’t on my watchlist… yet.
But will it be?
Absolutely.
Eventually.
When the stars align, the hype dies down a little, and I find myself ready to laugh, cheer, and maybe cry over a bald man who just wants a real fight.
Until then, I’ll keep pretending I don’t know who Mumen Rider is.
